NYRR Youth Programs
Team for Kids runners raise funds to provide free NYRR youth running programs, events and resources to 267,000 youth across the nation. NYRR youth programs empower youth of all athletic abilities to get moving, in addition to teaching teamwork, perseverance, and more!
The NYRR breadth of services includes school and team-based programs like Rising New York Road Runners, widely-attended NYRR road races and Youth Jamborees, and educational resources like Running Start, NYRR’s award-winning video series for coaching young runners.
Highlights of the 2016-2017 School Year
- Staff at Mighty Milers sites ran 260,270 miles (62,580 in NYC) during the 2016-17 school year--bringing the total of adult and kid miles to 7,258,536.
- Since 2007, New York City students have logged 20,783,476 miles and students outside NYC have logged 18,161,819 miles.
- 63% of the Mighty Milers public/charter schools met Title I requirements (i.e. >=40% Free and Reduced-Price Lunch).
- 7,727 (5,597 NYC) Adaptive Physical Education students at 359 sites (206 NYC) logged 196,649 miles during the 2016-17 school year.
- During the 2016-17 school year, NYRR awarded $48,725 worth of books to 434 Mighty Milers sites as part of Miles for Books.
- During the 2016-17 school year, we gave 3,954 pairs of sneakers to kids in our youth programs.
- Mighty Milers students received 846,610 incentives over the course of the school year, including 137,497 marathon medals.
Disparities in Physical Education in NYC
- In May 2015, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer released Dropping the Ball: Disparities in Physical Education in New York City Schools that reported:
- 26% percent of children in grades K-8 are obese or severely obese
- 32% of NYC’s schools do not have full-time certified PE teachers
- 28% of NYC’s schools do not have dedicated space for PE
- NYRR is working to address these disparities by providing free running programming to youth at 810 unique sites in New York City.

Our youth events served over 18,500 kids through events such as the Youth Running Series, youth jamborees, and kids races.
