In what will be my 114th race, I am excited to take to the streets of New York City for the Popular Brooklyn Half on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Known as the largest half marathon in the country, the 13.1-mile race will take participants on an epic tour of the borough of Brooklyn, from the Brooklyn Museum to the finish line at the Coney Island boardwalk.
But what’s even more exciting than that is the opportunity to fundraise on behalf of an incredible charity that is committed to youth programs. As a member of Team for Kids, I’m joining a dedicated group of adult runners whose support helps raise funds for youth programs and events. About 250,000 children nationwide benefit from Team for Kids funds and are encouraged to be physically active for life through motivation and confidence building. A jaw-dropping $74 million dollars has been raised by members since 2002, which supports training for teachers and coaches; program and practice supplies; and student incentives.
It is an honor to continue my mission by joining others in the fight against childhood obesity and health issues. The mentorship programs offered at my own nonprofit organization, LEAP Foundation DC, are geared toward helping youth in the DC and surrounding areas find ways to improve their education, stay healthy both mentally and physically, and commit to staying on track for a positive future. Through my dedication to the sport of endurance running, I have raised funds for local, national and global charities that recognize the important mission of presenting opportunities for youth to achieve overall health and wellness. I have raced for programs like Mentor Me India (Tata Mumbai Marathon, Jan. 20, 2019); Kids Run Miami (Miami Marathon, Jan. 27, 2019); Students Run LA (LA Marathon, March 24, 2019); American Institute for Cancer Research (Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, April 14, 2019); and many more throughout the years.
Your support could afford a young person who otherwise may not be introduced to exercise an opportunity to engage in the sport of running, changing the course of their futures and beginning them on a path to a healthier tomorrow.
(Donations in support of this fundraiser do not assist with travel or other costs to participate, but rather directly benefit the charity for which I am running. In this case, Team for Kids, providing training for teachers and coaches; program and practice supplies; and student incentives that encourage young runners to adopt lasting lifestyle changes.)
Making a donation is easy! You can click on the Donate button on this page to give through my secure fundraising site. You can also find information about where to send a check, or how to get your company to match your gift here! All contributions are tax deductible.
Your giving helps New York Road Runners youth programs:
- Serve nearly 250,000 students nationwide - including 125,000 in New York City's five boroughs - through free NYRR youth running programs, events, and resources.
- Engage students in long-term athlete development (LTAD), a lifelong journey that guides an individual's experience in sports and physical activity to develop healthy minds and bodies for life.
- Help build the next generation of athletes by supporting coaches, educators, and fitness leaders with the tools they need to make a difference.
Whether you are a runner, have worked with children, or have kids yourself, I hope you will join me to further this great cause!
See you at the finish line!
